Seek community engagement through a variety of communication methods to reach all residents. DISCUSSION: The Prior Lake City Council has for nine years lent its support to the fight against domestic violence by proclaiming October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Members of the Community Safety Advisory Committee (CSAC) have once again encouraged the city council to make this proclamation. CSAC Members will be on hand to heighten awareness of and show support for eliminating domestic violence from our community. The mayor will read the proclamation and present it to a representative that will be here from Southern Valley Alliance for Battered Women. PROCLAMATION DECLARING OCTOBER 2019 AS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH IN PRIOR LAKE WHEREAS, Domestic violence is a serious crime that affects people of all races, ages, gender and income levels; and WHEREAS, Domestic violence is widespread and affects over four million Americans each year; and WHEREAS, One out of three American women has experienced domestic violence in her lifetime, and WHEREAS, One in three Americans has witnessed an incident of domestic violence; and WHEREAS, Children who grow up in violent homes are believed to be abused and neglected at a rate higher than the national average; and WHEREAS, Domestic violence costs the Nation billions of dollars annually in medical expenses, police and court costs, shelters, foster care, sick leave, absenteeism and non-productivity; and WHEREAS, Only a coordinated community effort will put a stop to this heinous crime; and WHEREAS Domestic Violence Awareness Month provides an excellent opportunity for citizens to learn more about preventing domestic violence and to show support for the numerous organizations and individuals who provide critical advocacy services and assistance to victims. NOW THEREFORE, I, KIRT BRIGGS, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF PRIOR LAKE, MINNESOTA hereby proclaim October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the City of Prior Lake, and urge our citizens to work together to eliminate domestic violence from our community; and, to show support for the Southern Valley Alliance for Battered Women serving our community as a resource for victims of domestic abuse.
