Prior Lake, MN 55372-1714 MEETING DATE: AGENDA #: PREPARED BY: AGENDA ITEM: DISCUSSION: CITY COUNCIL AGENDA REPORT June 5, 2006 5J Bill O'Rourke, Chief of Police CONSIDER APPROVAL OF A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING 1. RECEIPT OF $25,000 FOR THE PURCHASE OF A VEHICLE FOR THE PRIOR LAKE DARE PROGRAM; AND 2. THE PURCHASE OF A 2006 DODGE MAGNUM. Introduction The purpose of this resolution is to authorize the City of Prior Lake to accept a $25,000.00 contribution from the Prior Lake Rotary Club to be used to purchase and equip a 2006 Dodge Magnum for use by the DARE officer assigned to the elementary schools in Prior Lake. Historv The relationship between the City of Prior Lake and the Prior Lake Rotary Club, particularly as it is concerned with the Drug Abuse and Resistance Education program (D.A.R.E.) in the schools, goes back many years and is a prime example of the collaborative efforts with other public and private entities of our 2030 Vision. Ten years ago the Rotary Club donated a 1996 Jeep Cherokee to the Prior Lake Police Department for use by the D.A.R.E. officer. The D.A.R.E. program is seen as another way of instilling our "small town values;" and a highly visible D.A.R.E. vehicle is viewed as an integral part of the marketing strategy of D.A. R. E. Current Circumstances The Prior Lake Rotary Club has offered to replace the aging D.A.R.E. vehicle with a "hip" vehicle that will garner the attention of the elementary and middle school children target for the drug abuse educational program. The D.A.R.E. committee within the Rotary Club selected a 2006 Dodge Magnum as the type of vehicle that could catch the attention of students throughout the school system. The vehicle would be set up with graphics of D.A.R.E. to make a splash as it moves around town. An additional advantage of this vehicle is that it is rated as a police package and therefore suitable for use as an additional service vehicle for the department. As a police package vehicle, it is available on a State contract for $22,416 if purchased by the department. The remainder of the $25,000 offered by the Club would be used for graphics and other equipment on the vehicle. www.cityofpriorlake.com 5 2rJ::J'3'DJd~6nW~~7?4~Ctlflrlf 952.447.4245 A formal presentation of the donation will be made at a future Council meeting.
