HomeMy WebLinkAbout22-037 Resolution of the City's Position on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging 4646 Dakota Street SE Prior Lake, MN 55372 RESOLUTION 22-037 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY’S POSITION ON DIVERSITY, EQUITY, INCLUSION AND BELONGING Motion By: Burkhart Second By: Thompson WHEREAS, the City of Prior Lake acknowledges that it values and respects the diversity of all community members, businesses, and faith-based organizations, community partners, visitors, employees and leaders; and WHEREAS, the City of Prior Lake recognizes and upholds the inherent dignity of and right for all to equitable access, opportunity, and participation; and WHEREAS, in the City of Prior Lake, diversity can be celebrated and optimized to make the city more welcoming, productive, and advanced; and WHEREAS, WHEREAS, WHEREAS, WHEREAS, WHEREAS, WHEREAS, diverse and unique viewpoints can enhance the City of Prior Lake and the mission of its Council, staff, and stakeholders; and the City of Prior Lake defines diversity as the inclusion of all types of people (such as people of different races, geographic, linguistic and neuro- diverse cultures, etc.), we recognize it is often considered in terms of human differences such as age, gender, race and ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or identity, and other forms of identity. Diversity alludes to the reality that all people are unique, thus all people are diverse; and the City of Prior Lake recognizes achieving equity requires intentional effort towards disparity and inequity to ensure that everyone has access to the same opportunities. The notion of equity accepts that biases and obstacles exist for many that do not exist for others. What is fair might in fact vary across groups or individuals, recognizing there can be variance in both barriers and advantages, and access to opportunity; and it is in the best interests of the city to encourage diverse and inclusive organization to optimize community engagement and employee satisfaction. Diversity is about the inherent power of the collective, and the benefits different perspectives can accrue to the performance, and general effectiveness of a community; and inclusion has to do with how diverse people with different identities are included, respected, and valued. Inclusion means creating an environment in which our community diversity of talent, attributes, contributions will be respected, accepted, appreciated in pursuit of our common mission; and belonging is a feeling that can be enforced by a culture that an organization purposefully creates. Thus, advancing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) efforts is in the best interest of a given organization and its people and stakeholders. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF PRIOR LAKE, MINNESOTA as follows: 1. The recitals set forth above are incorporated herein. 2. The City will incorporate these positions into its decisions and operations. Passed and adopted by the Prior Lake City Council this 7th day of March 2022.
