AGENDA ITEM: Mayor for a Day Presentaion- Olivia Taylor
BACKGROUND:
In late 2022, students in 4th, 5th and 6th grade at schools in the Prior Lake Savage Area School
district were given the opportunity to write an essay answering “If you were mayor for a day, what
would you do to help make Prior Lake even better?” The City of Prior Lake Community
Engagement Committee chose three winners, one from each of the grades.
Tonight, Olivia Taylor, a 5th grader at Five Hawks Elementary School will be presented as Mayor
for the Day. Below is her essay submission.
If you were mayor for a day, what would you do to help make Prior Lake even better?
“Hi, my name is Olivia Taylor and the reason I am submitting you this essay is to become what
my dad calls me a mini mayor. Since I was 2 years old, I've had an outgoing personality and
spoke to people with a smile on my face whether I know them or not. I think I'm your best choice
because I have great ideas and I would be a friendly representative as your mini mayor. As the
mini mayor for a day, I would work on understanding if there were an opportunity to add more
basketball hoops and swings in the community parks. I would also want to have meetings to
discuss promoting equality in the Prior Lake community. A couple of my friends and I have dealt
with racial comments, so I want to bring this to your attention because it affects my confidence
and I've talked with a few of my friends, and it brings them down. To help resolve these racial
dilemmas I've got an idea of a Multi-Cultural Festival. I have Asian, Latina, Latino, Brazilian,
African, American, Indian, Vietnamese, French, European and Afghanistan friends. I talked with
them, and they would be more than happy to contribute to the Multicultural Festival whether its
food, speech, music shows and presentations or more. Thank you for taking the time to look over
my essay and I hope you consider me as your mini-Mayor and remember I stand with a smile,
and I stand for the people.”
