RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Proclaim May 21-27, 2023 as Public Works Week in Prior Lake.
BACKGROUND:
The Prior Lake Public Works Department is a team of 39 people dedicated to maintaining a safe,
clean and enjoyable environment for all residents, businesses and visitors. Our mission is to
enhance the quality of life through responsive, efficient, and cost-effective delivery of services
consistent with community values.
In recognition of the commitment to maintain safe and effective infrastructure for a growing
community, the City Council is asked to join in the designation of May 21-27 as Public Works
Week in Prior Lake. The national theme of this observance is Connecting the World Through
Public Works, which highlights the way public works professionals connect us through
infrastructure and inspire us through their service to the community.
Since 1960, The American Public Works Association (APWA) has sponsored National Public
Works Week. Across the nation, APWA members use this week to energize and educate the
public on the important contributions of public works in their daily lives; planning, building,
managing, and operating the infrastructure of our local communities.
In celebration of National Public Works Week, the public works team will be hosting the second
annual “Somethin’ ‘Bout A Truck” open house on Tuesday, May 23 from 4pm to 7pm at the
Maintenance Center (17073 Adelmann St SE). Attendees will be able explore the wide range of
trucks and equipment that are used throughout the community. There will be kid-friendly activities
including a truck-themed obstacle course, the “Weenie Wagon” food truck, and the opportunity to
help paint a snowplow blade. The results of our “Name the Snowplow” contest will also be
revealed at this event, which is free to the public.
As we approach National Public Works Week, we would like to commend the following individuals
for their tireless effort, contribution, and service to the public:
Alex Breeggemann Brad Doerr Steve Korbel

PROCLAMATION
Public Works Week in Prior Lake
Whereas, public works services provided in our community are an integral part of our citizens’ everyday lives; and
Whereas, the support of an understanding and informed citizenry is vital to the efficient operation of public works systems and
programs such as water, sewers, streets and highways, public buildings, and parks; and
Whereas, the health, safety and comfort of this community greatly depends on these facilities and services; and
Whereas, the quality and effectiveness of these facilities, as well as their planning, design, and construction, is vitally dependent
upon the efforts and skill of public works officials; and
Whereas, the efficiency of the qualified and dedicated personnel who staff public works departments is materially influenced by the
people’s attitude and understanding of the importance of the work they perform,
NOW THEREFORE, I, KIRT BRIGGS, MAYOR OF PRIOR LAKE, MINNESOTA do hereby proclaim the week of May 21 - 27,
2023, as Public Works Week in the City of Prior Lake, and I call upon all citizens and civic organizations to acquaint themselves with
the issues involved in providing for our public works, and to recognize the contributions which public works officials make every day
to our health, safety, comfort and quality of life.
th
Given under my hand and Seal of the City of Prior Lake this 15 day of May, 2023.
