ATTACHMENTS: 1. 02 13 2024 City Council Minutes Be the Change Project By: Parker Johnson and Henry Nordby 7th Grade Twin Oaks Middle School What is the Be the Change Project? A project in which we picked a health topic to make an impact on within our community. We know that students in our district are using vapes and as PL athletes we wanted to Be the Change to stop the trend of vaping. We planned to create a petition to ban or increase the age limit of buying vaporizers and we also created a survey that represents middle schoolers knowledge on vapes. Then we let the city council know our position of banning vapes in Prior Lake. Problems with Vaping ●One problem with vaping is most e-cigarettes contain nicotine, nicotine is highly addictive and can harm teenage brain development. ●Vaping can cause asthma. ●If you’ve smoked in your past life, you have a 39.1% chance of getting lung cancer. ●A disturbing fact about vaping is the nicotine in one vape is equal to 50 cigarettes or essentially 2.5 packs of cigarettes. All Around Impact on Health Vaping takes a toll on your body physically, but that’s not all vapes do, they take control mentally. You feel you constantly need more, which eventually can lead you to having lung cancer, or emphysema because of addiction. The excess medical care costs among exclusive e-cigarette users totals $1.3 billion annually. Independent vape shops had a combined annual income of 28.17 billion dollars in 2023. According to the AP News, survey shows 10% of high school students said they had used electronic cigarettes in the previous month, down from 14% last year. ***We want that even lower*** We made a petition to ban vapes or increase the limit in age, we sent this to the mayor of Prior Lake Kirt Briggs. We had over 100 signatures from grades 6-8. Our Petition and Letter Middle School Vaping Survey Results 40% of our friends know someone who has vaped. 82% of our friends know what it does to their body but 1 out of 10 of them will vape in high school. 74% know the risk of addiction and that they can become depressed, lose friends or family and still may vape in high school. Sources and Resources Kids health is a website which has every single disease about kids. Lung.org is a website where their trying to stop lung disease, helping with stopping lung disease would be stopping vaping and smoking.
