AGENDA ITEM: Mayor for a Day Presentation- Lydia Nelson
BACKGROUND:
In early 2024, students in 4th, 5th and 6th grade at schools in the Prior Lake Savage Area School
district were given the opportunity to write an essay answering “If you were mayor for a day, what
would you do to help make Prior Lake even better?” The City of Prior Lake Community
Engagement Committee chose three winners, one from each of the grades.
Tonight, Lydia Nelson, 4th grader at La Ola del Lago Elementary School will be presented as
Mayor for the Day. Below is the essay submission.
If you were mayor for a day, what would you do to help make Prior Lake even better?
“Dear Mayor Kirt Briggs, I wish to be mayor for a day. Please allow me to introduce myself. I am
Lydia Nelson in fourth grade at LODL at Grainwood. I have ideas to make our city a better place.
For example, I believe that we need to have more events in our city. Our community needs to be
together more. Friends and family are everything to me, and other people who are alone deserve
to be loved too. So, the more events, the more people will be united. Secondly, in my opinion, we
should have an annual community garbage pickup. This would be a good idea because if there is
garbage everywhere, our land and animals could be harmed. Lastly, I think that we should have a
fun community volunteer day in the summer. During this day we could plant trees, make and
decorate bird feeders, and have a picnic. These three ideas would bring people together and help
the earth. Mr.Briggs, I don’t need an office or fancy chair, I just want to make this city a better
place. ¡Yo quiero ser alcalde por un dia!”
