AGENDA ITEM: Mayor for a Day Presentaion- Olamide Santos-Anughora
BACKGROUND:
In late 2023, students in 4th, 5th and 6th grade at schools in the Prior Lake Savage Area School
district were given the opportunity to write an essay answering “If you were mayor for a day, what
would you do to help make Prior Lake even better?” The City of Prior Lake Community
Engagement Committee chose three winners, one from each of the grades.
Tonight, Olamide Santos-Anughora, a 5th grader at La Ola del Lago Elementary School will be
presented as Mayor for the Day. Below is the essay submission.
If you were mayor for a day, what would you do to help make Prior Lake even better?
“If I were Mayor of Prior Lake For a Day, I would buy more audiobooks and braille books for the
Prior Lake Library and school libraries. I would buy these books because I want to help people
who are deaf, blind, or have learning disabilities read books that they like. I believe that having
more books for people with disabilities helps them feel more included since they can read the same
books as everyone else. I would also buy these books because reading strengthens your brain,
makes you smarter, and teaches you new words, tasks and lots of smart things to do in life. During
my time as Mayor, I would also find lots of volunteers to visit Prior Lake nursing homes. This is
important because I want to spread cheer to older people and make them happy. I would also want
to hire a couple of entertainers to come and sing or play an instrument for the older people. For
example, my great-grandma enjoyed watching people play piano. Also, as Mayor For the Day I
would bring volunteer doctors to City Hall. People who live in Prior Lake could go see a doctor, like
my grandma, for free and get help so they aren’t sick. That’s important because I know that going
to see a doctor can be expensive and I want to help people feel better. My final change as Mayor
For a Day would be to build more dog parks with fun obstacle courses. I would also make sure
that the parks have plenty of water, trees, and toys for the dogs, and benches and snacks for their
owners. This is important because a lot of people who live in Prior Lake like to be outside and
enjoy the nice views and weather. Going to parks with their dogs will also keep people healthy and
happy.”
