Dear Bernie,
Weare writing this letter in response to your request to determine if new 950,000Btu!hr water
heater (that replaced 3 -500,000Btu!hr old water heaters) with 200 gallon tank has an adequate
water supply and venting capacity.
I've visited the site and spoke to Mr. Jay Crothers with Jay Hawk Mechanical. These are our
findings:
The hot water capacity is sufficient for 67 apartment building (at 2-1/2 persons per apartment
and 2-hr peak load period criteria.
The water heater has 14"vent and connected to a common flue with connector rise more than 4ft
and very short horizontal length.
Existing Type B double wall-common vent diameter is 24" with vent height more than 30 ft.
This is (According to Table 504.3(1), Page 82 Minnesota Fuel Gas Code) sufficient to vent 7
natural draft boilers at 375Mbh each, two small pool heaters and 950,000Mbh water heater.
There is one Outside Air Opening 56"x36", sleeved thru the wall and ducted down to 12" above
finished floor. Part of this opening is taken by 24"x24"separate sleeve with 3,000 cfin capacity
mechanical fan at the ceiling level.

According to Minnesota Fuel Gas Code, ph.304.3.2: the C.A. opening would need I sq. in per
3,000 Btu/hr.
There is no louver, but a !h" by !h" mesh over the face of the opening.
Total area of the opening is 1,532sq.in.
The mechanical combustion air supply shall provide for:
3,000 Btu/hr x 1,532sq.in =4,596,000 Btu/hr and exceeds the total heat input rating of all the
appliances located in the boiler room.

RE; Prior Lake Project, Water heater venting
The venting on this project is acceptable and in accordance with the National Fuel Gas
Code, NFPA Standard 54, ANSI Z223.1 which contains the following provisions.
7.2 Minimum safe performance
7.2.1 Adequate Draft.
The venting is Double Wall B-vent 24" Dia, 50 foot height
3575 M8H input total
Mech. Draft of 3000 CFM and a 36 X 20 Louver
