CONSIDER APPROVAL OF RESOLUTION #98-XX
AUTHORIZING PURCHASE OF TWO 1998 FORD
CROWN VICTORIA SQUADS CARS
FEBRUARY 2, 1998
The police department is requesting
approval to order squad cars that have
been approved and adopted in the 1998
budget. The vehicles will be used to
replace a 1996 Chevrolet with 63,000
miles and as a spare marked squad when
other marked squad cars are down for
repairs, a capacity that does not
currently exist. This spare squad will
not have all the essential equipment of
a marked unit but will have the basics
needed to temporarily do the job. Our
experience has shown that keeping squad
cars for more than a year in police
service substantially increases
maintenance costs and down time. The
spare vehicle will enable us to better
manage the fleet, balancing mileage and
extending serviceability. To save money
the replaced vehicle is reassigned to
other city departments and even older
vehicles are discarded. In this case
the fire chief's 1985 Ford will be
replaced.
Superior Ford of Plymouth has once again
received the Government bid for police
16200 Eagle Creek Avenue S.E., Prior Lake, Minnesota 55372 / Ph. (612) 440-3555 / Fax (612) 440-3666
squad cars. The police department is
replacing two cars and will be ordering
two (2) 1998 Ford Crown Victorias from
the government bid for full size squads.
The cost for each unit is $20,202.00.
Total cost for the two (2) vehicles is
$40,404.00. The police department
budgeted $45,000.00 for squad cars in
it's 1998 budget.
DISCUSSION: With the approval of the city council
the police department will order two (2)
1998 Ford Crown Victorias from Superior
Ford. We are not sure when the cutoff
date for ordering will be but Superior
Ford suggested that orders be placed as
soon as possible. Cutoff dates in the
past have always been around the middle
of February.
ALTERNATIVES: The following options are available:
1) Allow the police department to order
two Ford Crown Victorias at a cost of
$20,202.00 each.
2) Deny the purchase of the two squad
cars.
RECOMMENDATION: Alternate 1: Allow the police
department to order two 1998 Ford Crown
Victorias.
ACTION REQUIRED: Motion and second as part of the
consent agenda to adopt Resolution
98-XX allowing the police
department to order two 1998 Ford
Crown Victorias from Superior Ford
under the Hennepin County bid.
Total cost for the two vehicles that
would come out of the 1998 budget
WOU? be $40,404[
