DONALD RYE, PLANNING DIRECTOR
CONSIDER APPROVAL OF CITY PARTICIPATION
IN THE UNITED STATES CENSUS BUREAU
LOCAL UPDATE OF CENSUS ADDRESSES
PROGRAM
MARCH 2, 1998
The attached letter from the U.S. Census Bureau seeks City
participation in their program designed to update addresses.
The goal is to insure that the Census count is as accurate as
possible. What they have asked the City to do is review the
addresses they have on file and to inform them of any
errors or omissions the City may be aware of.
An accurate Census count is beneficial to the City in
several regards. Financial aid systems use the population
figure as a base when pro-rating disbursement of aids to
state and local units of governments. It assists in accurately
planning for public improvements such as schools and
highways and for private infrastructure elements such as
telephone, electric power and gas. It provides a snapshot cf
many aspects of the community including social and
economic characteristics of the population and housing data
which are useful in anticipating the needs of the
community for many services and programs.
The primary issues are the need for an accurate Census and
the amount of staff time needed to respolld to the
information which must be reviewed. Staff believes an
accurate Census is important to the City but we are unnble
to provide an estimate of the time commitment necessary to
accomplish this task.
.
1. Direct staff to participate in the Local Update of Census
Addresses program.
2. Direct staff not to participate in the Local Update of
Census Program.
