HomeMy WebLinkAbout10B - Appointments to Boards & Commssions AGENDA #: PREPARED BY: SUBJECT: DATE: BACKGROUND: DISCUSSION: ALTERNATIVES: STAFF AGENDA REPORT lOB r'y '\ \ FRANK BOYLES, CITY MANAGER ~ CONSIDER APPROVAL OF COUNCIL EMBER APPOINTMENTS AS LIAISONS TO CITY BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS. MARCH 16,1998 The City Council adopted its revised Bylaws on March 2, 1998. The Bylaws provide that the City Council is to appoint one of its members as liaison to each board and commission. This agenda item is intended to conclude these appointments. At the March 2, 1998 meeting, Councilmember Wuellner was appointed the liaison to the Library / Resource Center Building Committee. The City's remaining committees and commissions requiring liaison appointment are: Planning Commission, Park Advisory Committee, and Lake Advisory Committee. By acting as liaison to a committee, Councilmembers will appreciate a broader understanding of City Government and the issues it faces. It is therefore useful to have Councilmembers who may not otherwise be familiar with certain City boards and commissions become liaison to that body. With this in mind, the following appointments are suggested for Council consideration: Planning Commission - Councilmember Pete Schenck Park Advisory Committee - Councilmember Jim Petersen Lake Advisory Committee Councilmember Tom Kedrowski 1) Accept the staff recommendation as proposed 2) Revise recommendations and make appointments RECOMMENDATION: The liaison position has a two-fold purpose. In the first place, it will help the Councilmembers to learn more about aspects of City government which they may not be familiar with. Second, the liaison position offers a better opportunity for information to flow from the Council to the Commission and from the Commission to the Council. My 16200 Eagle Creek Ave. S.E., Prior Lake, Minnesota 55372-1714 / Ph. (612) 447-4230 / Fax (612) 447-4245 AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER recommendations for appointment were based upon these facts. Councilmember Kedrowski has served on the Planning Commission, and Councilmember Schenck has not. Councilmember Petersen is very familiar with Lake related issues, but Councilmember Kedrowski is not a lakeside resident and may bring a new perspective. Councilmember Petersen has not had the opportunity to work extensively with Parks or Planning. Liaison appointments are for a one year period. At the end of this year, Councilmembers will have the opportunity to work in another area of our organization. ACTION REQUIRED: Motion and Second to make liaison appointments. 316LIA.DOC
