DISCUSSION: STAFF AGENDA REPORT AUGUST 3,1998 5C RALPH TESCHNER, FINANCE DIRECTOR CONSIDER APPROVAL OF ELECTION JUDGE APPOINTMENTS FOR 1998 PRIMARY & GENERAL ELECTIONS Historv: Under state statute, the City Council must annually approve the list of election judges. Current Circumstances: A primary and general election are scheduled for this fall for Tuesday, September 15 and Tuesday November 3, 1998 respectively for the purpose of electing candidates for the following offices: FEDERAL United States Representative STATE Governor & Lieutenant Governor Secretary of State State Auditor State Treasurer Attorney General State Representative JUDICIAL Supreme, Appeals & District Court Judges , COUNTY County Attorney County Sheriff Soil & Water Supervisors (2) SCHOOL BOARD. Referendum Issue (approx. $691.00 per pupil unit operating levy) Bond Issue (approx. $4,000,000 for buildings & technology) Issues: The Primary election is the sole responsibility of the City of Prior Lake from a cost standpoint while the General election will be a joint effort between the City and School District, with City Staff coordinating the process. For information purposes all precincts with the exception of Precinct #4 are located within Prior Lake School District 719. A small portion of Precinct #4 lies within Shakopee School District #720 and these voters receive ballots relating only to ISD #720. Total registered voter count is presently 8,369. It is interesting to note the similar size of precincts 1, 2 and 3 with respect to number of registered voters. Each precinct will be staffed with 4 election judges. Within the precincts, there is relative party balance as required by election law. The polls shall be open from 7:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. The judges will report to their appropriate precinct location one hour prior to the poll openings for set-up preparation. Their compensation shall be $6.75 per hour. Conclusion: Staff would recommend approval of the attached list of election judges by precinct. Staff has contacted the judges and each has expressed interest in serving in this year's election. 1) Approve the Election Judge Appointments for 1998 Primary and General Elections. 2)Table this item for a specific reason.
