MICHAEL T. PETERSON, COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR
PROCLAMATION - RED CROSS "GET READY" CAMPAIGN AND
PRESENTATION BY RED CROSS CHAPTER CEO JAN MCDANIEL
REGARDING EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS.
PRESENTATION:
Introduction: The purpose of this presentation and proclamation is to promote
public awareness of the American Red Cross Community Challenge to "Get
Ready" for an emergency or a disaster.
A 2006 national study by the Red Cross found that the majority of Americans
have not taken basic steps needed to "Get Ready" for an emergency or disaster.
Twin Cities Area Chapter Red Cross CEO Jan McDaniel (a Prior Lake resident),
through the "Red Cross Community Challenge," has offered to assist Prior Lake
to conduct a public awareness campaign, provide information, training and
resources, organize events and challenge residents to do three things:
1" Get a Plan
2. Get a Kit
3. Get Involved
To "Get Ready," the City of Prior Lake is asked to:
1" Read the attached proclamation committing to a year-long
partnership,
2. Designate local government building space for a Red Cross free
community presentation,
3. Help the Red Cross encourage Prior Lake citizens to enroll in Red
Cross CPR training,
4. Place a link to the Red Cross website on our website (done).
5. Display Red Cross literature,
6. Display news and updates of the community challenge on signs and
message boards.
The City's participation in the American Red Cross Community Challenge is
consistent with the 2030 Vision and Strategic Plan. This program, along with
"Minnesota Well Fit," are wonderful examples of the goals and objectives
contained in our newest vision element, "Safe and Healthy Communities."

PROf;LAMATION
American Red Cross Year to GET READY!
Whereas, a survey conducted by the American Red Cross in 2006 found that the majority of Americans have not taken
even the basic steps needed to prepare for a disaster or an emergency situation; and
Whereas, disaster can strike quickly and without warning and being prepared is crucial to saving lives at home, in
school, at work and in the community; and
Whereas, the best way to be prepared for a house fire, tornado, or other disaster is for individuals and families to have
an emergency plan; and
Whereas, a disaster kit with enough supplies for each family member for three days can help your family in a winter
storm, pandemic flu, or other disaster when access to supplies might become limited; and
Whereas, children and adults trained in First Aid and CPR save lives and make our communities safer; and
Whereas, The Twin Cities Area Chapter of the American Red Cross through its Community Challenge has offered to
assist our community to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.
Now, Therefore, I, Jack G. Haugen, Mayor of the City of Prior Lake, Minnesota, do hereby proclaim 2007 the Year
to GET READY! and call upon local residents to Get a Plan, Get a Kit, and Get Involved to help save lives in the
City of Prior Lake, Minnesota.
