PRESENTATION BY LES SONNABEND, SUPERINTENDENT OF
PRIOR LAKE SCHOOLS REGARDING NOVEMBER, 1993 $1.5
MILLION REFERENDUM
OCTOBER 4, 1993
Prior Lake-Savage School District Superintendent, Dr. Les Sonnabend,
has requested time on the October 4, 1993 City Council agenda to
provide information about the scheduled referendum which will occur on
Tuesday, November 2, 1993. The $1.5 million referendum will provide
badly needed operating money in order that the school district can
continue to provide high quality educational services to its growing
student population. The referendum would authorize the $1.5 million levy
for the next five years. The anticipated annual tax impact which the
referendum would have on the owner of a $100,000 house would be less
than $70.00 per year.
Dr. Sonnabend will provide additional information on this subject and
respond to any questions Councilmembers may have. Attached is a
memorandum from Doctor Sonnabend on this subject. I expect that the
presentation will not require more than fifteen minutes.
RECOMMENDATION: Receive Dr. Sonnabend's presentation.

RE: Support For The School Referendum
The Prior Lake - Savage Area School Board has decided to place a 1.483706
million dollar referendum on the November 2nd, General Election, ballot. The
PLUS (Prior Lake. Savage Unified for Schools) Committee has begun a
campaign for the passage of this referendum.
We are seeking support for this referendum effort and needless to say, we view
the future of the school district and the future of the City of Prior Lake to be
closely intertwined.
The good news of this referendum is that of the approximately 1.4 million dollar
total, the state aid portion would be just a little over 1 million dollars. Thus, we
would have to raise 453,000 dollars locally. This brings the monthly cost for a
$100,000 home down to under $6 per month.
There are many excellent educational reasons to support this referendum but
there is also an economic reason as well. For Prior Lake to continue to grow
and prosper, we feel that a strong school system is a necessity.
Therefore, we urge you to support this referendum in any way that you see
possible, up to and including a motion of support and a public declaration of th~
support.
