RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE WESTWOOD ELEMENTARY
SCHOOL "SPECIAL FRIENDS" PROJECT
MOTIONED

WHEREAS, Westwood Elementary School is conducting a "Special
Friends" project: and
WHEREAS, the "Special Friends" project involves an
intergenerational program between older adults and young
children: and
WHEREAS, the "Special Friends" project enriches the lives of
young children and older adults by forming new
friendships in a positive learning environment: and
WHEREAS, the "Special Friends" project provides participating
adults an opportunity to share with children their
skills, crafts, life experiences and knowledge: and
WHEREAS, the "special Friends" project provides a unique
opportunity for participating adults to touch the lives
of our young children in a very positive forum.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
PRIOR LAKE, MINNESOTA, that the City of Prior Lake
support the "special Friends" project within westwood
School.

program goals of: 1) to give older adults the opportunity to
share their skills, talents, and life experiences with school age
children: and, 2) to develop relationships between children and

Program Goals:

1. To give older adults the opportunity to share their skills, talents and life experiences
with school-age children.
2. To develop relationships between children and senior adults which build a mutual
understanding and appreciation and respect of generational differences.
Teacher Responsibilities:
1. Meet with the older adult and learn about their background and how they can
contribute to the classroom.
2. Prepare students for the visit.
3. Provide any materials or equipment needed for a presentation.
4. Let older adult know in advance of any changes in school or classroom schedule
which could conflict with their visit.
5. Communicate any problems. suggestions or requests to the program coordinator.
Older Adult Responsibilities:
* 1. Be willing to share your skills. knowledge, interests. and experiences with children.
.-k 2. Communicate needs. suggestions or any thoughts to the program coordinator.
~ 3. Be prepared for children who will open their hearts and share many things you
would not expect.

- Introducing a craft, skill or hobby.

Relating to local historical events.
Sharing recollections of childhood school memories.

- Being a "Special Grandparent" to a class. With the guidance of
the teacher, the class would like to correspond with you through
letters or an occasional phone call.
