Many approaches are being employed in communities to discourage the use of dru~s. Besides education, task forces are be1ng formed to fight drugs on a local level. Currently there are 27 task forces in the state active in narcotics investigation. Monies are available for these task forces through federal grants that match funds with local communities. The City of Prior Lake for the last year has been a member of the Southwest Metro Drug Task Force. About two and half years ago, Staff enlisted the aid of the Southwest Metro Task Force. This unit was principally operating in western Hennepin, and Carver Counties. Our department gave the Southwest Metro Task Force a motorcycle that was seized in return for partial services. The City has formally been involved with the Task Force for one year (1991). Over the past year staff is very pleased with the results being achieved with the Task Force. This year the police would actively like to participate again with the Southwest Metro Drug Task Force. It would compliment programs such as DARE and complete the circle of drug ~revention and enforcement services necessary 1n Prior Lake. Enclosed is a copy of the Southwest Metro Drug Task Force Joint Power Agreement. identified following the Staff had alternatives: 1) The Citr participat1ng Task Force. The 1992 budget is tight and sufficient contingency funds exist to make the $8400 payment this year. This would be consistent with your actions in 1990. A motion to partici~ate in the Southwest Metro Drug Task Force is 1n order with funds for 1992 allocated out of the 1991 contingency balance. ------,--,......".' ~ ..~-,,---~~~,.._-"._---,,",,"---_.,_."...__.~---"__"-----'---......-----..'... ..
