HomeMy WebLinkAbout4E - One Replacement 72" Mower STAFF AGENDA REPORT SUBJECT: 4E PAUL HOKENESS, PARKS & RECREATION DIRECTOR CONSIDER APPROVAL OF ONE REPLACEMENT 72" MOWER FEBRUARY 18, 1997 AGENDA NUMBER: PREP ARED BY: DATE: INTRODUCTION: The 1997 Park Maintenace operating budget includes $16,000.00 to replace one 72" mower with cab and broom. BACKGROUND: The Parks Maintenance Department relies heavily on this piece of equipment which is used for mowing in the summer and maintaining skating rinks and sidewalks in the winter. We currently have four Toro mowers in the fleet, and the 1987 mower is in need of replacement as it will not last through another summer of mowing. DISCUSSION: Typically most communities replace this particular piece of equipment every four to five years. In our new equipment replacement matrix we are suggesting that these mowers be replaced every five years. If you keep these mowers much longer than five years repair and maintenance costs increase and you usually end up replacing costly engines and transmissions. The longer we keep these machines the more breakdowns we experience, and the down time decreases the efficiency of our park maintenance operation. Also, if you keep these mowers too long the trade-in value decreases dramatically. M.T.1. was the lowest bidder for this mower and will supply us with a Toro mower, which is compatible with the existing mowers and all of our attachments. Long Lake Tractor did not bid. M.T.I. of Plymouth's bid was $15,619.29. Cushman Motors bid was $16,131.55. A difference of$512.26. My recommendation is to purchase the Toro 3250 from M.T.I. for three reasons. 1.) M.T. I.'s bid is $512.26 lower than Cushman Motors. 2.) All of the attachments we have now, i.e., mower decks, brooms, blowers, roll bars, and cabs are all interchangeable from one Toro to another. None of our current attachments will mount on a Cushman. 3.) Cushman does not meet all specifications. Thanks, f\V 16200 Eagle Creek Ave. S.E., Prior Lake, Minnesota 55372-1714 / Ph.
