STATUS REPORT ON OUTDOOR LEARNING CENTER-DAR
FOSSE.
OCTOBER 6, 1997
In an earlier Update, I advised the City Council that the
School District is interested in converting the land
immediately adjacent to Five Hawks Elementary School into
an outdoor learning center. If successful, the outdoor learning
center would include land owned by the School District, a
parcel of land presently owned by Mesenbrink and associated
with the Assisted Living Facility, which would be deeded to the
School District, and the use of City park property around the
large pond in the Westbury Ponds Area
Dar Fosse, prinicipal of Five Hawks, has been a leader in this
effort. At the October 6 Council Meeting, Mr. Fosse will show
the Council an aerial photograph of the property together with
a sketch depicting the trails and learning areas he is seeking
to install. The trails proposed for installation would be wood
chip or class five trails, not bituminous, in an effort to
maintain the "natural" character of the area. The School
District is seeking grants to install trails and a platform to
complete the learning center. The Rotary has preliminarily
committed $5,000 to the School District for this purpose.
Mr. Fosse is not seeking City Council action, but simply wishes
to keep the Council advised of his progress.
I anticipate that Mr. Fosse's presentation will require about
fifteen minutes.
