CONSIDER APPROVAL OF A RESOLUTION APPOINTING PERSONS TO
SERVE ON THE PRIOR LAKE AREA COMMUNITY SAFETY TASK FORCE
Introduction
The purpose of this agenda item is to request that the City Council approve
appointments to the Prior Lake Area Community Safety Task Force (PLACSTF)
Historv
On September 17, 2007, the City Council approved a report which outlines steps
that have been and could be taken in the short and long range to improve
community safety. Part of the report proposed the creation of a task force. The
task force was to include representatives from five stakeholder groups as
recommended by the Jacob Wetterling Foundation including:
. Parents, grandparents, caregivers
. Schools, faith based, civic and daycare
. Law enforcement and legal
· Public policy makers at various levels
. Corporations
Notices were placed in the local newspapers and on the City Website. We also
sent written and telephone invitations to persons who we believe will facilitate
completion of the task force objectives.
Current Circumstances
Each individual on the task force is likely to represent more than one stakeholder
area. The task force members are proposed as follows:

It is expected that the task force work will require four to six meetings. Given the
size and diversity of the membership, it may be possible to divide into
subcommittees to accomplish specific assignments with fewer meetings of the
whole.
ISSUES:
This Council-created task force is a positive and proactive way to address safe
and healthy community issues. Although its composition follows the
recommendations of the Jacob Wetterling foundation, it is breaking new ground
in many ways. To assist us in accomplishing our objectives, Nancy Sabin has
offered to act as an advisor to this project. The chair of the task force is
expected to be recruited from the membership. Of others wish to join the task
force as we proceed, it would be our intention to welcome them unless the City
Council directs otherwise.
FINANCIAL Because the ultimate work products are not known at this time, the total cost of
IMPACT: this project cannot be calculated. Status reports will be presented to the City
Council to assure that costs are known before they are committed to.
ALTERNATIVES: 1. Adopt a resolution appointing members to the Prior Lake Area Community
Safety Task Force.
2. Adopt the recommendations with amendments.
3. Take no action.
RECOMMENDED Alternative #1.
