At the request of Lonny Slinger of McDonald Construction Inc., Craig Oswell, PE of Oswell
Engineering and Consultfng, LL.C. reviewed the support of a proposed roof donner addition.
The architectural drawings, prepared by St. Amant Design and dated 8-29.og, as well as photos
of the donner's constructfon, were provided by McDonald Construction. Now that the work Is
complete, the city building inspection department has requested an engineering review of this
condition.
The existing roof system Is full span wood trusses spanning approJdmately 22 feel The new
dorme, 18 falae and Is framed as a gable face extending from the side of the roof truss.s. The
dormer Is approximately 10 feet wide and has a 12/9 pitched roof with a rtdge beam supporting
rafters spanning to side waUs at the front of the dormor and framed off the existing structure for
the rear portion.
My review detennlned that the framing of the dormer allows for a relatively uniform distribution
of loading across the existing roof surface, re8ulting In at le8st five of the existing roof trusses
8upporting only the superimposed dead load of the new dormer. My calculations Indicate that
this dormer loading Increases the strelses In tho existing trusses by approximately 10%.
However, accounting for the redundancy of both the new and existing framing and the added
strength the roof sheathing provides to the system, which Is not accounted for In ~pIcaI truss
designs, the existing roof 8ystem is structurally adequate to support the new donner.
The observations and opinions expressed In this report are based on my profe88lonaJ
experience and engineering judgment. No site visit was porformed for this project.. If you have
