PARTICLE PROCESSING & CUSTOM RESEARCH Paul Verbanac AVEKA, Inc. 2045 Wooddale Dr. Woodbury, MN 55125 November 7, 2007 Mike Solheid Deutsch Construction 3105 LeRoy Avenue New Prague, MN 56071 Dear Mike: Aveka Characterization Lab received a sample of saw dust (Cutting Edge) on November 5, 2007. Particle size analysis was requested. Of particular interest was the percentage of particles below 420 microns. These particles are classified as combustible and must be handled in a special manner. Since the sample was presented as wood shavings, analysis using the Horiba LA-930 laser scattering particle size analyzer was not practical — owing to their large size. Instead, samples were sifted using a Gilson Sonic Sieve. This technique involves creating an ensemble of sieves of various mesh sizes, with the sieves with smallest openings on the bottom and those with largest openings on the top. The sample is applied to the top sieve, and the ensemble is placed in the Gilson Sonic Sieve device. Mechanical force along with shaking is used to separate portions of the sample according to their size. Since the density of the shavings was low, sieving was conducted in quadruplicate and fractions on each sieve collected. Sieve sizes of 5600 microns, 3350 microns, 2000 microns, 1000 microns, 710 microns, and 425 microns were used. Results of the analysis are attached. They do show particles smaller than 425 microns, however, these comprise only 0.28% of the entire sample set. 651-730-1729 2045 Wooddale Drive, Woodbury, MN 55125 • FAX 651-730-1826 A VEKA, in c. Cutting Edge Moidings Hello Mike, At this point in time, we've had Aveka, Inc., a local laboratory, complete the evaluation of the particle size of the sawdust generate by Cutting Edge Moldings. As it turns out, the sawdust does not fit the definition of "Combustible Dust". Please consult the attached report describing the Sieve Analysis. The test has shown that 99.72 percent of the dust is larger than 425 microns. The International Fire Code defines combustible dust as particulate which is smaller than 420 microns. It is my professional opinion that we have particles that are larger than those described in the code. The vast amount of the dust (95.89 percent) is in the range of 2,000 microns, or larger. The particulate smaller in size than the 425 micron mark is incidental to the whole equation. Conclusion: The sawdust generated by Cutting Edge Moldings does not fit the definition of "Combustible Dust". Chapter 13 of the International Building Code need not apply. The above summary completes this analysis. ff additional questions arise regarding this project, please don't hesitate to contact us at RB Architects. Best regards, John E. We will continue to produce the same quality products and provide the same professional services as we have done in our Burnsville location throughout this time. In these 12 years our safety record has been perfect. Our business consists mostly of "reman" work. This means bringing in wood from wholesalers (i.e. Weekes Forest Products and Weyerhaeuser), remanufacturing it into mouldings and other profiles with the use of a 4-head moulder. It is then delivered back to the wholesalers to be distributed to retail lumberyards. Our material handling equipment consists of a 2404 Isuzu flat bed and a 2005 Komatsu fork lift (see attached Eaust Emissions Analysis). The fork lift has 443 hours of operation. Presently the extra LP tanks aze stored in a locked cage outside of the building. The Isuzu is also parked outside. The units of wood can range from 8 to 20 feet long, 6 inches to 3 feet high and 42 inches wide. They are off loaded with our fork lift, placed in front of a machine and remanufactured into the desired specifications. These are then reloaded onto the flat bed using the fork lift and returned to the wholesaler. We occasionally manufacture products using Tight Bond II and Tight Bond III glue (see attached data sheets). Other operations include: surfacing to thickness, sanding and ripping; all of which is done with the aide of a dust collector (see attached). In tum, the shavings are placed in a 40 yard dumpster (which is stored inside of the building) and taken to a farm to be used as cattle bedding. The Cutting Edge Mouldings Company is not a retail store. We do not provide any prefinishing services. We are a custom shop that manufactures on a per order basis. Therefore storing wood is not profitable to the campany. The Cutting Edge Mouldings Company is looking forward to conducting business in its future location and will continue to provide qua.lity service to its customers. , _ . . . _.. . _ _ . . , i BENNETT MATERIAL HANDLING, INC. 1009 HILL STREET, HOPKINS, MN 55343-2099 ;. . . .,- ,..,. i _. -. .. . , , EXHAUST EMISS{ONS ANALYSIS •Internal Combustio Ensine Powered Industrial Tncks: i I The employer shll monitor enviconrrnt'al eXpo.ure of empbyees to carbon monoxide whenever ; intemai combustion egine powered indusUiat: trucks as defined in oode of federai regulations. title 29, i section 1910. 178 (a) (1) are operated indoors to ensure ttat carbo monoxide levels do not exceed ; those give in Code of Federal regu[ations, title 29, stio 1910.1 Q00, table 2-1.
