MONTHLY NARRATIVE
As you can see, this report, for the first time offers comparative data from the same month last
year. Fluctuations within crime categories over time can be dramatic, especially when dealing
with a small sampling On the other hand around the holiday season we most often observe
higher rates of assaults, disorderly conduct and domestic violence. It is a sad but true irony of
the holiday season. Traffic stops and vehicle accidents, both of which are often weather
related, are down for the time being in 2013. Overall incident volume is up. Vehicle lockouts are
1
an optional activity area we do as part of our customer service efforts. Few departments
provide this service. But the public is typically grateful for the service as they are embarrassed
in the first place and the service saves them $100 as well.
A burglary is defined as any unlawful entry or attempted forcible entry of any structure to
commit a crime once inside. It would be classified as a burglary for someone to enter an
unlocked garage with the intent of committing a crime.
Of the five burglaries listed for January: 1) Reported on 1/8 was the entry into an unlocked
garage and most of the car windows were smashed. Victim had a suspect in mind but refused
any further info. 2) Reported on 1/15, a screen on the side of the house was cut and a window
opened. Unsure if entry was made — nothing missing. 3) Reported on 1/20 was a burglary
related to a domestic assault — suspect was arrested. 4) Reported on 1/25 was forced entry
into a seasonal cabin sometime between 1/10 and 1/25. Nothing was taken. 5) Reported on
1/19, the front door of a residence was kicked in when the owner was inside. Suspect was
arrested a couple of blocks away and has been charged. These five burglaries were in various
parts of the city and do not appear to be related.
The Police Department would appreciate feedback from the city council regarding whether this
is the type of narrative you would like to receive in future reports.
