Volunteer Youth Athletics Survey
1. Do you have a volunteer youth athletic association?
2. How does the city assist them? Staff? Financial?
Maintenance?
3. What are registration fees for ages 6-8, 8-10, 10-12,
12-14, 15 and older?
4. Do you have problems finding enough parents to coach?
5. Is your community a NYSCA member? (National Youth
Sports Coaches Association)
6. Is the association self-sufficient in terms of fees
covering costs?

SURVEY SUMMARY OF CITIES
SHAKOPEE: Does have a volunteer youth athletic association.
The city assists in providing a facility for registration, typing
of rosters and schedules, and maintenance of fields. Registration
fees are based on activity as well as age group and range from
$25.00 up to $75.00. The city does receive $13.00 per
participant and activity for maintenance fees. Problems with
finding coaches only occur in the older age groups for the girls
acti vi ties. They are no longer a member of the NYSCA due to
higher costs, but felt that the tapes were very helpful. The
association is not self-sufficient in terms of fees covering
costs and need to run a fund raiser.
LAKEVILLE: Does have a volunteer youth athletic association
that is run in cooperation with Burnsville and Apple Valley. The
use and maintenance of fields are the two ways that assistance is
offered to the association. The registration fees vary on the
type of sport not necessarily the age group. All of the fees are
set by the association. They are a member of the NYSCA. The
association is not self-sufficient in terms of fees covering
costs and need to run a fund raiser.
BURNSVILLE: Does have a volunteer youth athletic
association that 1S run in cooperation with Lakeville and Apple
Valley. The city assists the association by allocating
facili ties, maintenance of fields and use of public facilities
for registration purposes. All registration fees are set by the
association. They have always had trouble finding enough coaches
for all age groups and for all sports. They are not a member of
the NYSCA. The association is not self-sufficient in terms of
fees covering costs and needs to run a fund raiser.
BLOOMINGTON: Does have many volunteer youth athletic
associations. The city assists in the scheduling and maintenance
of fields, and some of the printing. To participate in the BAA a
$10.00 family membership fee is needed plus the cost of each
activity. Fees for the BAA range from $20.00 to $35.00 for
soccer, baseball, volleyball, and basketball. Fees for golf and
football range from $60.00 to $75.00, and up to $225.00 for
hockey. The association has had problems in the past with finding
coaches for the girls athletics, but feels that it is due to the
population growth. The city is a member of the NYSCA. The
association is not self-sufficient in terms of fees covering
costs and needs the support of a fund raiser.
MINNETONKA/HOPKINS: Does have several volunteer youth
athletic associations. The city provides the use and maintenance

of the fields. Each association sets their own registration
fees. The city is a member of the NYSCA, but each association has
their choice of using the NYSCA for their training purposes. None
of the associations are self-sufficient in term of fees covering
costs and need to run some sort of fund raiser.
PLYMOUTH: Does have a few volunteer youth athletic
associations that are run in cooperation with the cities of New
Hope and Wayzata. Membership into anyone of the associations is
based on the school district in which you live. The city
provides field scheduling and maintenance of those fields.
Maintenance fees are assessed when the association hosts a
tournament with teams from outside of three cities. The
community is a member of the NYSCA, but the associations have the
choice to use them. None of the associations are self
-sufficient in terms of fees covering costs, and all use the help
of fund raisers.
MAPLE GROVE: Does have a few volunteer athletic
associations that are run in cooperation with the city of Osseo.
The city has a staff member that sits on the board of directors
for the three major associations: hockey, basketball, and
football/baseball as a non voting member. They are there to
advise and to obtain facilities. The city also does the
maintenance of fields. Baseball programs are run entirely through
the city until the age of nine. Registration fees for baseball
ages 9-11 is $60, ages 12-15 is $65.00. Football and basketball
fees are $45.00. Finding coaches for all of the sports has always
been a problem, but the association uses a threatening technique
that has not yet failed them. They threaten to drop the team
from participating until a coach can be found. The city is not a
member of the NYSCA because they developed their own training
program over 10 years ago, and feel that it works very well.
They also feel that the NYSCA fee of $15.00 per coach is too
high. None of the associations are self-sufficient in terms of
fees covering costs and rely on some type of fund raiser.
BROOKLYN PARK: Does have a couple of volunteer youth
athletic associations. The city provides the associations with a
full time staff member to be the administrator over projects and
functions. The staff member is also involved in the purchasing of
equipment for the associations. The city also pays the printing
bill for both associations which is usually between $7,000 and
$10,000. Field scheduling and maintenance is also done by the
city. Registration fees vary according to sport not necessarily
the age group. Fees for baseball, softball, basketball, and
soccer are all between $25.00 and $35.00. Finding coaches has
always been a problem with these programs, but it has not been a
problem with the BPYHA, which is the hockey association. The
community is not a member of the the NYSCA, but has their own

form of training. The BPAA is self-sufficient in terms of fees
covering costs, but the BPYHA has to rely on help from fund
raising.
EAGAN: Does have a few volunteer youth athletic
associations that run in cooperation with Mendota and Burnsville.
The city assists the associations by providing a staff member to
sit on the board of directors. They also work in cooperation
with the school districts 196 and 197 for the maintenance of the
fields and facilities. They have not had a major problem finding
coaches for any of the sports. They are a member of the NYSCA.
None of the associations are self-sufficient and rely on help
through fund raisers.
APPLE VALLEY: Does have a volunteer youth athletic
association that is run in cooperation with the cities of
Lakeville and Burnsville. The only assistance that they provide
for the association is the maintenance of the fields. They have
always had problems finding coaches to volunteer, but feel that
is common and will always be a problem. The community is a
member of the NYSCA. The association is not self-sufficient and
relies on the help through tournaments and fund raisers.
EDEN PRAIRIE: Does have thirteen volunteer youth athletic
associations, because each sport is run as a separate
association. The city provides a staff liaison for each of the
thirteen different associatons along with providing maintenance
of fields. Each of the associations sets their own registration
fees. There have been no problems finding parents to coach any of
the sports, and in some cases such as hockey and basketball they
have a problem with too many parents volunteering. One of the
staff liaisons feels that this is because they are a growing
community with mostly young families. The community is a member
of the NYSCA, but only five of the associations choose to
participate in the training. Most of the associations are
self-sufficient in terms of fees covering costs, but some need
the help of a fund raiser.
