9 February 2017, Meeting Minutes
Attending: Janine Alcorn, Liz Heile, Pat Dougherty, Linda Ringstad, Mark Elliott.
Absentee: Gina Gertner, Betsy Jader, Woody Spitzmueller, Kevin Burkart, Rick Steinhaus.
Meeting called to order at 4:15 pm by Pat. Initially the committee did not have a quorum of members in
attendance however Janine Alcorn did arrive shortly after the meeting was convened which did assure a
quorum of members attending.
3. Approval of meeting Agenda: Motion to approve by Linda, 2nd by Woody; approval unanimous.

5. No hearings scheduled.
6. Presentation
Present from the school district were: Dr. Teri Staloch, School Superintendent, Principal Dr. Dan
Edwards from Twin Oaks, Principal Dr. Dave Lund from the high school & Principal Sasha Kuznetsov
from Hidden Oaks.
Presentation by school district.
All the schools have secure entrances with timers on the doors.
Cameras are inside and outside all the schools. More are needed & they store up to 30 days of footage.
Information provided about the Minnesota student survey given to the eighth graders every 3 years.
In October they have Unity Day which is about not bullying.
They have counseling and social work groups. Positive behavior incentive systems - HOMS and TOMS;
“Report it” for bullying and a tip line; Health and FACS curriculum; Connect program which collaborates
with Scott County Mental Health.
Sixth grade WEB (Where Everyone Belongs). Seventh grade CLIMB and respect retreat. Eighth graders
lead WEB program for sixth grade.
Sixth, seventh, eighth grades offered “Second Step” program for bullying prevention in home room one
day per week. Program purchased with grant from the SMSC.
High school has 87 cameras, 4 campus security officers, 1 detention officer and 1 Savage Police Officer.
For student support systems they have 6 certified guidance counselors, 1 chemical health worker, 2 social
workers, 1 RN and assistant, LIVE (lead, inspire, value, everyone) Program.
Ninth grade health – they have CLIMB, chemical awareness, stress management, and periodic
presentations such as mock crash and speakers.
Youth problems in Prior Lake are:
· Alcohol
· Tobacco
· Depression
· Cyber bullying
Also found out that youth mental health needs are increasing here as nationwide.
The Area Learning Center for at risk students is a charter school with 100 kids on the waiting list. A six
year graduation rate of 90.5%.
When asked what we could do they responded with:
· Prior Lake American letter should be aimed at parents.
· We could read a book “Why Do They Act That Way?” by David Walsh.
· We could partner with Middle School activity afternoon in late May & talk to them about summer
safety.
· Volunteer after school help 2-4pm Tuesday & Thursday in the Middle Schools.
· And a question for us to consider – do we promote Unity Day at the end of October where people
wear orange?
Mark Elliott informed us that April 10-23 TZD focus is distracted driving.

Discussion on the letter to the Prior Lake American for Prom, focusing on the safe managed environment
the school provides.
-A letter to the paper
-also possible for the School to put a letter to students distributed through schoology.
