Parks Advisory Committee Minutes 5/20/10 6:02 p.m. - 6:30 p.m. 1. CALL TO ORDER: Meeting called to order at 6:02 pm by acting Chair Mike Feriancek Members Present: Mike Feriancek, Ron Ceminsky, Kyle Haugen, Kendall Larson, Kelly Loose Members Absent: Eric Spieler, Dan Ruhme Staff Present: Al Friedges, Angie Barstad, Kelly Meyer Citv Council Liaison: Ken Hedberg 2. APPROVAL OF MAY AGENDA: Al Friedges recommended a workshop be held after this PAC meeting to discuss Park Utilization. Motion to add the workshop after the May 20th PAC meeting and to approve the agenda was made by Kyle Haugen, Second by Kelly Loose; motion carried 3. APPROVAL OF APRIL MEETING MINUTES: Motion to approve the meeting minutes by Ron Ceminsky, Second by Kyle Haugen; motion carried 4. JAZZ FESTIVAL: K. Haugen: A presentation was made giving an overview ofthe Lakefront Jazz and Blues Festival being held on July loth at Lakefront Park. This event is being sponsored and run by the Prior Lake Rotary. The rotary wanted to raise money for their organization while providing the community with great music. The planning for this festival began 3 years ago with the rotary and City staff. No action required. 5. SOUTH SHORE AND RAYMOND AVE. PARK NAMING Meyer: The City policy for naming parks was presented. The City will solicit possible names from the Prior Lake community and townships. Once the names have been received staff will bring them back to the PAC and the PAC will then make a recommendation to the City Council. The possible names will be brought to the July PAC meeting. No action required. 6. JEFFERS POND UPDATE Friedges: The bridge behind the Jeffers Pond school is complete. The shelter and kiosk were approved by City Council on 5/17/10. Final details are being worked out with the Jeffers Foundation Board of Directors for the installation of the chip trail. No action required 7. COMMUNITY GARDEN UPDATE Ceminsky: The plots are looking well at the Community Garden area. Barstad: We have 7 lots left to rent Friedges: At the request of the Community Garden board, staff is getting a price for a fence around the plots to keep animals out of the gardens. The Community Gardeners are interested in raising money for this improvement. There may be a donation of $1 ,000 - $2,000 from a Prior Lake organization toward the cost of the fence. No action required 8. RECREATION UPDATES Barstad: We still have plenty of room in our summer programs. Registration is going slow but well. Recreation seasonal staff will flyer neighborhoods around the parks where the neighborhood park parties will occur approximately I Y2 weeks before the scheduled party dates so everyone in that area will know the time/date & other information about the event. Our first Battle of the Bands will take place on 7/22 at 7pm at Lakefront Park. We are currently taking registrations for this event. The winner from our battle will compete at the Dakota County Fair's Grand Battle and play at a band shell at the Minnesota State Fair. Community Education and the City of Prior Lake Recreation Department are teaming up to offer Family Campout Night in Lakefront Park on 7/30. The cost is $35 per family. A family can rent a tent from the City for $10. We will make smores, have a scavenger hunt and more that night. No action required 9. FUTURE MEETING DATE - June 17th. 6n.m. in the Citv Council Chambers Motion to adjourn was made by Kendall Larson, Second by Kyle Haugen, motion carried.
