HomeMy WebLinkAbout160816 LAC Minutes 1 4646 Dakota Street SE Prior Lake, MN 55372 LAKES ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES August 16, 2016 CALL TO ORDER: The August 16, 2016 regular meeting of the Lakes Advisory Committee (LAC) was called to order at 4:35 pm. Present were Member Kallberg, Vice-Chair Streefland, Chair Weninger, City Water Resources Engineer Young, and City Council Member Thompson. APPROVAL OF MINUTES: NONE HEARINGS: NONE OLD BUSINESS: 5a. Community Outreach Opportunities Young: Presented the staff report for the agenda item. Highlighted items on the list that have been updated since the last meeting. Streefland: Noted that the new rain gauges given away at the Neighborhood Park Parties were well-received. Weninger: Noted that the tracking sheets were popular and the LAC ran out of these sheets during one event. Kallberg: Would like to see LAC members promote the tracking sheets as science project kids can do. Noted that some members are already doing this. Presentation item only; no vote was taken. NEW BUSINESS: 6a. Lakefront Days 2016 Debriefing Young: Introduced the agenda item. August 16, 2016 Lakes Advisory Committee Minutes 2 Kallberg: Noted that it was very busing during the Saturday 2 -4 p.m. timeslot. The questions for the spinner game were too difficult for young children, but LAC volunteers were able to modify the questions as needed. Suggested new questions for next year, focusing on “kid questions”. Thompson: Agreed that questions were difficult but also that the kids learned something from these difficult questions. Kallberg: Noted a couple issues with the spinner game and offered suggestions on how to modify the design. Weninger: Volunteered to repair the spinner game to improve function. Young: Stated that the game will be repainted after it is repaired. Asked volunteers which timeslots were busy. Noted that Saturday was busy until about 6:30 p.m. Suggested working until 7 p.m. next year. The members present agreed. Mentioned that the LAC reduced the number of paper handouts this year. Thompson: Stated that Friday 6-8 p.m. was busier than the same shift on Saturday but not extremely busy. Suggested keeping this shift for next year. Kallberg: Suggested that volunteers should be in front of the table instead of behind it. Thompson: Suggested having a theme for each year. Noted that the past 2 years have been focused on water conservation. Weninger: Stated that the Prior Lake-Spring Lake Watershed District had too many handouts and that the LAC had about the right amount. Presentation item only; no vote was taken. 6b. Fall Clean Water Cleanup Plan Young: Introduced the agenda item. Noted that the upcoming Fall Clean Water Cleanup is scheduled for Sunday, October 30. Noted that leaf bags will once again not be used; leaves will be raked onto tarps and moved to collection areas on the parking lots. The City Public Works Department will remove large piles of leaves the next day. Kallberg: Noted that there were too many prizes left for the numbers of volunteers. Suggested that the volunteers let people know that there will be prizes after lunch. Thompson: Stated that there could be conflicts with church. Weninger: Noted that local church members often attend, and that the event is scheduled later in the morning so that people can have a chance to attend early church services if they so choose. August 16, 2016 Lakes Advisory Committee Minutes 3 Kallberg: Stated that more coordination of volunteers was needed on the day of the event, so people know where to rake and what they should be doing. ANNOUNCEMENTS / CORRESPONDENCE Young: Gave an overview of an upcoming boat tour, currently being planned by the Prior Lake- Spring Lake Watershed District. This will take the place of the annual LAC-CAC joint meeting. The date has not yet been set so LAC members were asked for their preference. Kallberg: Mentioned that he received a complaint about a restoration site on the lake at Watzl’s Beach. Young: Noted that this is a new site and additional maintenance will be performed this year. There are many native species starting to become established in this area. Long-term maintenance will include mowing 1-2 times per year. Vegetation should keep the geese out of the beach area. Weninger: Took a poll of members and determined that a Thursday evening would be best. Young: Noted that the LAC would like 1-2 new members to start in November. Chair Weninger’s last meeting will be in October as she is reaching her term limit. [note: this was later found to be an error as Chair Weninger’s term limit ends 10/31/2017] Weninger: Suggested that the City advertise for the LAC openings in the Prior Lake American. Streefland: Noted that the MN DNR will be holding an invasive species summit October 5-6 in St. Cloud. Would be beneficial for all to attend. Attendance is capped at 450 people. ADJOURNMENT: With no further business brought before the LAC, a motion to adjourn was made by STREEFLAND and seconded by KALLBERG.
